Mata Traders works with women in India and Nepal in marginalized communities, and focuses on gender equity and empowering women. The women are offered health care, paid maternity leave, retirement pensions, and daycare with their employment. Social workers on staff assist the artisans in addressing their personal needs, from opening a bank account to situations of domestic violence and dealing with HIV/AIDS. There are literacy classes, computer training, and regular workshops on topics like hygiene, nutrition, and parenting. Because the women are paid a fair wage, they are able to put their children in school, which also helps break the cycle of child labour. In a society where women rarely work outside of their homes and certainly aren't offered opportunities to educate themselves or have a voice, this is revolutionary.
